38.538°N 123.01°W – Armstrong Redwoods State Reserve is located in Sonoma County, north of Guerneville. The state park plays host to several acres of Coast Redwood Trees which need wet and mild climates to thrive. If you’re looking an opportunity to experience a redwood forest with minimal crowds, this is the perfect spot. Armstrong Reserve includes self-guided trails, picnic areas, a visitor center and an outdoor amphitheater.
Since the park is state supported it is accessible for an $8 fee. Most of the trails are easy hikes, however there are more strenuous hikes for those wanting a challenge. Unfortunately there is no camping area in the redwood grove, but if you travel up the road you can find accommodations in Austin Creek State Recreation Area which is near the park.
Armstrong doesn’t exhibit the largest or most breath-taking redwoods, but it is a good escape if you are looking to get away from the crowds. If you are from North Carolina like myself, these trees definitely dwarf the long-leaf pines back home.
