Free Backlink FlipMyDesign.com

September 18th, 2008

Joe and I created a site this year called flipmydesign.com. It really never took off and I have no idea why. The site has a Google page rank of 4 and we don’t even use rel=”nofollow” attribute on the designers’ urls. I cannot understand why designers won’t utilize a design showcase to get a good solid backlink? If you have a site that you’ve flipped, by all means add it. It’d be a great link and most of all it’s free!

Stitcher Radio on iPhone App Store

September 17th, 2008

I found this neat program on the app store today. It allows you to stream your favorite up-to-date news programs. Pretty nifty since I get tired of hearing ABC News updates on 101.1 WZTK since they ditched FOX News.

Clients Should Submit Wireframes

September 16th, 2008

Ok - so I know not everyone on the planet is tech oriented. Surely they understand that just walking in and saying “I want a website” is going to cause much undesired pain for both parties. First and foremost, it’s hard to create an estimate on how much the website will cost when there are no specs.

A great analogy is building a house. Most people usually look at other house plans or have some idea of what they want in their house, they are just not sure where in the house they want certain things. That’s where a designer comes in and waves their magic wand and makes everything better. Saying “I want a website” is like saying - “I want a house” with no idea of what you want in it. Below are just a few questions to ask yourself:

  • What colors do I like?
  • What other websites have characteristics that I like?
  • How many unique page designs will I need?
  • What kind of things do I want on each of those pages? (search bar, sidebar, navigation, logo, footer)
  • Will I need to be able to edit the content myself without knowing html?

Providing this kind of information is critical in pricing your project accurately and setting a time frame for delivery. I recommend every client take the time to sit down and put together their thoughts on paper for each page you want designed. Scan them if necessary and email them to the designer. Seeing something is better than nothing at all.

Embarq Naked DSL

September 15th, 2008

I’ve been paying nearly $60/month for a landline and DSL from Embarq. After doing some research I read where if you demand Naked DSL (DSL without the need of a landline service) then they will offer you the DSL at $10 more per month as a retention tool. I first talked to the primary representative and of course he said they didn’t offer DSL without the phone service. I told him that they did and if he could push me to the disconnect center, I’d appreciate it. I then got a representative that I could talk to about it. I told her where I read on the net that they offered DSL without the phone service - then she said she could offer me the DSL only but it would raise my data price $10 more. I said let’s do it. Then she came back and said that she could offer me the phone service, DSL AND caller ID for 1 penny more than the data price. So basically I’m getting everything I had before I called plus caller ID for $34/month. I saved over $25/month with one silly phone call. How ridiculous is that?
