Art of Self Reliance

Not sure if any of you have seen the show “Dual Survival” that comes on the Discovery Channel on Friday nights or not, but it has spawned a new interest for me. Being an underdog or trying to make something out of nothing always seems to appeal to me for whatever reason. The show focuses on two guys showing the audience how to survive using the environment and other man-made items you may find around you. Just from watching a few shows I’ve learned so much. I can’t really say I’ve been able to replicate their success, but having the knowledge is a cool thing if you ever get in a situation that requires you to survive.

Most recently I tried using the Bow Drill Technique to start a fire, however was unsuccessful. I’m pretty certain the spindle wasn’t long enough and wasn’t using the right type of wood either. It’s important to find a dry wood and spend lots of time making your tools as efficient as they can be otherwise you’ll kill yourself and waste a ton of energy like I’ve already proven to be the case.

Anyway, there may be a day when you need something like this to get out of a stranded situation and knowledge is power they say. It’s never a bad idea to gain a survival skill set. If you’re interested in self reliance stuff you can check out Wilderness Outfitters Pathfinder School which has quite a few videos on Youtube showing different methods of making traps and starting fires. Maybe once I get the hang of doing this stuff successfully, I’ll post a few videos here.
